2017 Ford Edge vs. 2017 Ford Escape

Ford is known for its versatile, family-friendly lineup of crossovers and SUVs. Two vehicles you might consider are the 2017 Edge and 2017 Escape. Each provide spacious interiors, athletic performances, and innovative technology features that keep you connected throughout your journey. But which one is a better fit for your driving routine?

Wayne Ford explores the similarities and differences between the Edge and Escape in the following comparison. Before taking one for a spin around Clifton, Montclair, or Wayne, learn about the unique features available with the Escape and Edge.

Ford Edge vs. Escape-Which is Bigger?

With seating for five passengers and similar design cues, the Ford Edge and Escape share a strong family resemblance. One of the most noticeable differences between them, however, are their sizes. You'll find over 15 more cubic feet of volume inside the 2017 Edge, translating to extra stretching room for space for cargo. The Escape is more compact by providing 98.7 cubic feet of volume, which may appeal to drivers who don't need as much cargo room.

  • Ford Escape Storage Spare. You'll find up to 34 cubic feet of cargo space behind the Escape's second row, which is competitive for compact crossovers. If you need space for strollers, boxes, skis, or surfboards, just fold down its 60/40 split rear seats to create 68 cubic feet of cargo room.
  • Ford Edge Cargo Room. With over 39 cubic feet of storage space behind its second row, the Ford Edge provides plenty of room for everything from groceries to guitars. The Edge also comes with a 60/40 split-folding second row, which creates up to 73.4 cubic feet of storage room.

It's worth noting that despite its smaller storage area, the Escape provides half an inch more of front legroom than the Edge for a total of 43.1 inches. This may seem inconsequential at first, but could make a big difference for taller drivers and front passengers.

Performance and Gas Mileage

The 2017 Ford Escape and 2017 Ford Edge deliver athletic performances and have three engines to choose from. Each come with six-speed automatic transmissions and front-wheel drive, though, intelligent all-wheel drive is available to improve traction and handling on slick road conditions. Fuel economy ratings are comparable between these two crossovers, but the Edge creates more power than the Escape to make up for its larger size.

  • Gas Mileage. According to EPA estimates, the Ford Edge delivers up to 21 city/30 highway mpg. The Escape received an EPA-estimated 23 city/30 highway mpg.
  • Edge vsEscape Power. With its standard four-cylinder engine, the Ford Escape delivers 168 horsepower. The Edge's base engine is also a four-cylinder, but this one generates up to 245 horsepower.
